Overview

 

This course teaches participants how to respond confidently and effectively to a wide range of first aid situations in both community and workplace settings. You will learn how to recognise and manage casualties suffering from injury or illness, apply the DRSABCD action plan, and provide lifesaving CPR in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.

Training is scenario-based and contextualised to reflect realistic environments such as aquatic and recreation facilities. By the end of the course, you will be able to deliver appropriate first aid responses to a range of emergencies until medical assistance arrives

Participants under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the face-to-face session.

This course covers the following skills and knowledge areas:

  • Recognising and responding to emergency situations
  • Applying the DRSABCD action plan and performing CPR on adults, children and infants
  • Using an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Managing unconscious casualties, shock, bleeding, fractures, burns, asthma and anaphylaxis
  • Communicating details of incidents to emergency services and workplace supervisors
  • Evaluating and reporting first aid incidents in accordance with workplace procedures

Please allow approximately 11 hours in total to complete this course:

  • Online learning: 7 hours (self-paced – includes both HLTAID011 & HLTAID009 Provide CPR online work)
  • Face-to-face practical assessment: 4 hours

Delivery is via a blended model, combining self-paced online modules with a trainer-led practical session.

The online component focuses on theoretical knowledge and must be completed before attending the practical assessment. The in-person session is interactive and includes demonstrations, role plays, and real-world scenarios

Assessment – How will I be assessed? 

You will complete both knowledge-based and practical assessments:

  • Online: Knowledge questions to confirm theoretical knowledge.
  • Face-to-face: Demonstration and assessment of first aid and CPR skills, including:
    • Performing CPR on adult and infant manikins
    • Using an AED
    • Managing an unconscious casualty and simulated injuries
    • Demonstrating infection control and communication procedures
  • HLTAID011 – Provide First Aid: Valid for 3 years from the date of issue
  • HLTAID009 – Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation: Must be renewed every 12 months
